Inulin is a PREbiotic- it helps boost the levels of friendly bacteria in the gut. As a fibre, it is not digested, it travels in the large intestine where it "feeds" friendly bacteria. Inulin not only promotes good bacteria, it indirectly prevents the growth of harmful bacteria in the gut .
Beyond digestive health, new research is now showing that inulin can boost bone strength, help control blood sugar levels and may even reduce cholesterol. It has recently been highlighted in the BBC documentaries on ‘How To Stay Young’ and ‘The Truth About Sleep’.
This water soluble fibre slows down digestion and in turns slows down the release of glucose into the bloodstream. This can help keep you feeling fuller for longer, and also stabilise your blood sugar levels. It also helps prevents constipation and aids bowel movements.
How to take Inulin:
Some of the best food sources of Inulin include Asparagus, Garlic, Onions, and Jersulam Artichokes. But you can supplement Inulin in your diet by using a powder that you can sprinkle over food or use in smoothies.
Start with a small amount, then gradually increase the dose. We suggest 2 to 3 grams a day for the first week, then work your way up to at 10g or more (researchers have used levels of 10 to 30g). Because it feeds good bacteria, it may produce some bloating at the start!
